Benny Green brings his piano trio to Birdland. The billed trio format is piano, bass and drums, though the personnel for this date has not been announced.
Born in New York and raised in Berkeley, Green came up with Betty Carter, Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard, and spent four and a half years in the Ray Brown Trio. Oscar Peterson named him his protégé. His playing has been described as straight-ahead modern jazz with “swinging joy and finesse”; JazzTimes praised his “lush, idea-rich” ballad work and “warp speed” on Bud Powell’s “Tempus Fugit.”
