MEXAMORPHOSIS — 10th Anniversary Global "Mexican-Spiced" Music Journey + Open Fandango Jam & Dance

Nublu 151151 Avenue C, New York 10009

Mexamorphosis marks its 10th anniversary at Nublu 151 with a global “Mexican-Spiced” music journey led artistically by Guadalupe Peraza. The evening includes an open fandango jam and dance, extending the performance into a participatory gathering rather than a set by a fixed billed lineup. No individual performers are announced for this date.

Mexamorphosis is Peraza’s rotating cross-cultural music project. Peraza, a native of Mexico City, brings together voices, instruments from around the world, dance and visual arts to explore connections among music from different centuries and cultures, Western European early music and Mexican traditions. Its work mixes improvisation, original arrangements and new compositions while questioning the boundary between “folk” and “classical” music. Previous programs have moved through early music, son jarocho and salsa, then opened into community fandango; past collaborators and guests have included Farafina Blues, Sinuhe Padilla, Victor Murillo, Jae Lee and Swaminathan Selvaganesh. The project aims to bring underrepresented traditions, artists and audiences into the same musical conversation.

A second-floor club in the East Village, Nublu 151 is a compact space with a center stage and a balcony that overlooks the performers. The room is dark and grungy with solid acoustics and a disco ball, mostly standing room with a few stools that disappear quickly. The atmosphere is intimate and focused on music, with live sets and DJs spanning jazz, funk, Latin grooves, electronic, and world music. The building's layout supports diverse live performances, and the venue has its own record label. It's a place where musicians gather to play, attracting a crowd of music lovers and creatives. The vibe is laid-back, with a good attitude and openness to different styles going a long way.
