The 8-Bit Big Band
Sony Hall235 West 46th Street, New York 10036
The 8-Bit Big Band brings its large-ensemble approach to Sony Hall: a 30 to 65 member jazz and pop orchestra devoted to video-game music. The New York performance places themes associated with Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Kirby and Final Fantasy in expansive arrangements shaped by big-band writing, pop and other styles. Rather than treating those scores as novelty material, the group gives them the arranging, performance and production focus it associates with symphonic studio jazz orchestras.
Its members come from around the world, with most based in New York City. The band has won a Grammy for its arrangement of “Meta Knight’s Revenge,” and its album Backwards Compatible includes guests Grace Kelly, Adam Neely, Benny Benack III, Leo P. and the vocal group Accent. Members of Lawrence appear on Game Changer. Critics have called the work “surprisingly admirable” and “memorable,” “rich and complex,” and “a blast.” Writing about the group’s fifth album, DownBeat said it suggested “a thriving subgenre has been forged.”
