Duduka Da Fonseca Trio
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Duduka Da Fonseca brings his billed trio to The Django for a late-night appearance. The Rio-born drummer leads the group, though the venue does not name the other musicians for this date. Expect the meeting point of Brazilian samba jazz, bossa nova, and American jazz that has shaped the trio’s repertoire.
Da Fonseca began playing drums at 13 in Rio de Janeiro, then moved to New York in 1975 to pursue work with American jazz musicians and blend musical cultures. He founded and led Brazilian All Stars, Brazilian Express, and the New York Samba Band, and has co-led Trio da Paz since 1986 with bassist Nilson Matta and guitarist Romero Lubambo. His collaborators have included Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Airto Moreira, Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Kenny Barron, Lee Konitz, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter, John Patitucci, and Joe Henderson. A four-time Grammy nominee, he received an American Grammy nomination for his 2002 solo debut, Samba Jazz Fantasia. All About Jazz calls the trio “one of the most vital Brazilian combos in the business,” saying it “dances, dazzles, and speaks in jazz and Brazilian tongues.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
