Chris Beck Quartet
Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
Chris Beck leads his quartet at Zinc Bar, with the other members not named in the listing. Expect a set grounded in the classic straight-ahead jazz tradition, shaped by Beck’s own compositions and his stated blend of African-rooted and Gospel-informed influences. The Philadelphia-born drummer and composer brings the perspective behind his debut album, The Journey, to this Manhattan date.
Beck grew up in a musical family in Philadelphia and studied at Temple University before moving to New York in 2006. His early Philadelphia work included Robert “Bootsie” Barnes, Sid Simmons, Larry McKenna, Terell Stafford, and Tim Warfield Jr.; after arriving in New York, he studied with drummer Michael Carvin and later with Victor Lewis at Rutgers University. He now performs with Cyrus Chestnut, Oliver Lake, and Rufus Reid, and has shared stages with McCoy Tyner, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the Mingus Big Band, David Murray, Billy Harper, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, and Mark Whitfield, among many others. Zinc Bar calls Beck a “hard-swinging, powerhouse drummer” whose music pays homage to straight-ahead jazz while carrying his own sound forward.
Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
