Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Ms. Lisa Fischer joins pianist Orrin Evans and his trio at Birdland for a set built around the meeting of her vocals and Evans’s piano-led arrangements. The billed trio’s personnel have not been announced. Birdland describes a collaboration that moves through jazz, soul and beyond, with Fischer’s emotive delivery in close interplay with Evans’s writing. Their work together has also taken duo, trio and Captain Black Big Band forms, but this night is specifically a trio setting.
Fischer is the Grammy-winning singer behind “How Can I Ease the Pain,” known as well for 20 Feet from Stardom and for long-running work with the Rolling Stones and Luther Vandross. Her collaborators have included Sting, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Nine Inch Nails, Taylor Eigsti and Yo-Yo Ma. Evans is a Philadelphia pianist who leads the Captain Black Big Band, co-leads Tarbaby and formerly played with The Bad Plus. Keith Richards has praised Fischer’s “amazing power, energy, and projection.” All About Jazz heard “soaring, acrobatic vocal power” alongside Evans’s “refined, inventive jazz arrangements,” while San Francisco Classical Voice described a voice that can swell “from a quiet murmur to a gale-force roar.”
