Twangville brings a three-artist bill to Groove, featuring Matt Woods, Mic Harrison, and Carissa Johnson. The presentation comes from the Americana-focused music site, which has spent more than two decades covering folk, country, bluegrass, rock, and blues through reviews, interviews, videos, and live events. It is a chance to hear three songwriters and bandleaders whose work draws from distinct roots: Woods’ East Tennessee songwriting, Harrison’s stories of life and history, and Johnson’s punk and alt-rock anthems of resilience, heartbreak, and self-discovery.
Harrison grew up in Bradford, Tennessee, later moved to Knoxville, and played in The V-Roys and Superdrag before his solo debut Pallbearer’s Shoes. He has recorded and toured with The High Score for 20 years; his album Peach Blossom Youth closes with “Picnic at Shiloh,” tying childhood family memories to the Civil War site. Appalachia and East Tennessee run through Woods’ writing, while he tours solo and with Matt Woods and the Natural Disasters. He has shared stages with Tyler Childers, Frank Turner, CAKE, and the Black Lillies. Boston-born Johnson has toured for a decade solo and with her trio The Cure Alls, won Boston’s Rock & Roll Rumble in 2017, and has opened for Dorothy, TORRES, and Winona Fighter. She now splits her time between Boston and New York while preparing her sixth full-length album.
Groove offers a lively setting where music lovers gather to enjoy a range of live performances, often featuring multiple sets that stretch into the night. The venue’s space is designed for standing audiences, creating an energetic environment where the music takes center focus. A well-stocked bar serves as the hub for socializing before and after shows, while ticketing varies from free entry to modest cover charges, with advance purchase recommended for popular acts. The venue’s location in Manhattan places it within easy reach of the city’s vibrant nightlife, making it a natural stop for an evening out. Expect a night where the music pulses through the room, the crowd is engaged, and the energy builds as the night progresses, often with late-night jams or DJ sets extending the experience.
