Cabaret Room: Bewitched: The Songs and Loves of Rodgers & Hart, 7:00pm
Pangea178 2nd Avenue, New York 10003
Lisa Faith Phillips brings Bewitched: The Songs and Loves of Rodgers & Hart to Pangea with singer Deanna Kirk and pianist John Di Martino. Phillips weaves funny and touching stories about the songwriting partnership of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart through songs including “Manhattan,” “Bewitched,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” and “My Funny Valentine.” The show traces the pair from their first hit in 1925 through 28 musicals and more than 500 songs, addressing Hart’s hidden homosexuality, drinking, and early death. The evening closes with a sing-along of “Blue Moon.”
Phillips is an award-winning writer and performer whose original shows have been presented in New York, London, Dublin, Barcelona, and at the DC Capital and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. She is studying music theory at Juilliard and working on her first novel, Love in the Russian Tea Room. DC Metro Theater Arts called her “an incredible storyteller” whose work is “fascinating to watch and to listen to,” while The Huffington Post wrote that she “mixes absurdism and social satire to hilarious results.” Kirk is a New York City based jazz singer, pianist, and songwriter who owned Deanna’s, a downtown Manhattan jazz club. Di Martino is a New York City based composer, arranger, jazz pianist, producer, and educator.
Pangea offers a distinctive evening where live music and dining merge in a cabaret setting that feels like stepping into a classic New York supper club. The room features communal seating arranged on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging a shared experience among guests. The venue emphasizes the performers, with ticket prices supporting artists and production, while a $20 food and beverage minimum ensures a full dinner and drink service throughout the night. Shows typically start early evening, with the house opening at 6:00pm to allow ample time for ordering. Expect a night focused on attentive listening, where the music, from jazz to storytelling performances, takes center stage in a space designed for connection and immersion rather than casual chatter.
