John Lee Quartet LIVE at Roxy Bar
Roxy Bar2 Avenue of the Americas, New York 10013
John Lee returns to Roxy Bar leading his quartet for a live evening performance. The bassist, composer and Grammy-winning producer brings a high-energy small-group set to the TriBeCa room, with cocktails and American fare available alongside the music. This is a chance to hear Lee in his own quartet setting, rather than solely in the large ensembles and tribute projects that have marked much of his career.
Lee served as Dizzy Gillespie’s bassist from 1984 to 1993, performing and recording in the trumpeter’s quintet, big band and Grammy Award-winning United Nation Orchestra. After Gillespie’s death, his family asked Lee to develop an ongoing musical tribute, leading to the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars. He is now bassist and director of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience. His credits also include work with Gary Bartz, Larry Coryell, Jon Faddis, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Gregory Hines, Miriam Makeba, James Moody, Claudio Roditi, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner.
Roxy Bar offers a stylish setting where live jazz fills the air, accompanied by a menu that caters to diverse tastes including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The room features plush seating and a well-stocked bar, creating a comfortable environment to enjoy performances by resident musicians or special guests. Shows typically run in the evening with sets from 6pm to 10pm, followed by DJs spinning vinyl late into the night. Weekend brunches also feature live music, blending dining and entertainment seamlessly. The venue balances attentive service with a relaxed vibe, making it a place to savor both cocktails and music without distraction. Its location in Tribeca adds a downtown charm, inviting guests to linger over oysters or a crafted cocktail while soaking in the sounds.
