Roxy Bar Presents: Pianist Michael Garin
Roxy Bar2 Avenue of the Americas, New York 10013
Michael Garin brings his resident-pianist set to Roxy Bar, continuing the Tuesday-through-Saturday engagement. The evening is built around a piano-led flow that deliberately crosses repertoire lines: the listing names Shaggy, Om Kalthoum, Rossini, Jobim, Zappa and Raymond Scott among the musical worlds Garin folds into his selections. He also takes requests, sometimes announces that he is “in his office,” and has been known to tap dance from the piano bench. The result is a post-work musical program shaped less like a conventional recital than an ongoing conversation between songs, styles and the room.
A Drama Desk Award winner, Garin has been part of New York nightlife for decades. His résumé includes engagements at Elaine’s, the Monkey Bar, the Rainbow Room and Limelight’s VIP Room. In the mid-1990s he hosted midnight burlesque shows that helped launch the burlesque revival, and he co-created and co-starred in Song of Singapore, the environmental musical for which he received his Drama Desk Award. His work also extends to songwriting, singing, poetry, acting, and song-and-dance performance, including acting stints with Spike Lee. Garin has released Hey Look! It’s Michael and Mardie and writes daily promotional poems in an Ogden Nash style for his Roxy and other appearances.
Roxy Bar offers a stylish setting where live jazz fills the air, accompanied by a menu that caters to diverse tastes including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
