The Breaks
Sony Hall235 West 46th Street, New York 10036
The Breaks bring their funk and soul-jazz trio to Sony Hall: guitarist Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds, drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic, and organist Robert Walter of The Greyboy Allstars. Their set is built around the classic organ-trio frame of Hammond organ, guitar and drums, drawing on late-1960s boogaloo while leaving room for deep grooves, tight arrangements and fearless improvisation.
The trio’s members arrive with extensive experience across modern jam, funk and jazz, having toured widely, made landmark records and collaborated throughout those scenes. Their sound is described by the band as “deep grooves, fiery improvisation, and vintage organ-trio soul,” a useful guide to the meeting point between Roberts’s guitar, Moore’s drums and Walter’s organ. On their debut, they are joined by horn players Brad Walker, John Michael Bradford and Big Sam Williams, plus percussionist Pedro Segundo. Reviews have called the record an “infectiously joyful debut full length” and “a smooth ride and dynamite instrumental party album,” with particular praise for the group’s ability to “lock in and groove.”
