Silkroad Up-Close brings two sets to National Sawdust. Shane Shanahan Quartet presents Cycles Beyond Time, with Shanahan on percussion alongside Edward Pérez on bass, Harvey Valdes on oud and guitar, Megan Gould on violin, and Roopa Mahadevan on vocals. The music draws on Indian, Middle Eastern, jazz, rock, and minimalist traditions, with rhythm and improvisation at its core. Pérez then leads his trio with pianist Alex Brown and percussionist Keita Ogawa, joined by vocalist Mahya Hamedi for a program connecting jazz improvisation with global influences.

Shanahan is a Grammy-winning percussionist and composer who spent 20 years touring with Yo-Yo Ma as a founding member of Silkroad Ensemble; the New York Times praised his “virtuosic jester’s dance.” Grammy-winning bassist and composer Pérez, who is based in Queens, spent a decade with Silkroad and has worked with artists including Paquito D’Rivera, Eva Ayllón, Cristina Pato, and Marcel Khalife. Hamedi’s music bridges Iranian roots with contemporary jazz, alternative rock, and classical soundscapes.

National Sawdust offers a unique evening where music and innovation meet in a thoughtfully designed space that once housed a sawdust factory. The main hall, seating up to 185 guests with flexible arrangements, features a cutting-edge Meyer spatial sound system that immerses you in every note. The room’s raw brick walls and crystalline architectural elements create a striking contrast, enhancing the focus on the performance. A full bar is available, inviting you to enjoy a drink while fully engaging with the diverse range of genres presented by both emerging and established artists. Shows are ticketed, and purchasing ahead is recommended to secure your spot in this intimate yet spacious venue. The experience is centered on listening and discovery, making for an evening that feels both special and thoughtfully curated.
