Annea Lockwood and Nate Wooley: Sound Map of the Columbia River (Night 2)

Annea Lockwood, Nate Wooley

Roulette509 Atlantic Ave, New York 11217

Annea Lockwood and Nate Wooley present A Sound Map of the Columbia River, a three-hour sound work built from field recordings gathered on multiple journeys along the river. Delicately mixed in 5.1 surround sound and accompanied by a map of recording sites, it follows the Columbia from source to mouth as what the artists call an “emotional cartography.”

Lockwood, a sound artist born in Aotearoa New Zealand who lives and works in the US, is known for exploring natural acoustic sounds and environments, including river sound maps. Wooley, an Oregon-born composer and improvisor who moved to New York in 2001, has performed with Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Evan Parker and Ken Vandermark. The pair have also collaborated on Becoming Air.

Roulette occupies a beautifully restored 1928 Art Deco theater in Downtown Brooklyn, offering a spacious concert hall with a dramatic proscenium and a balcony that seats up to 400. The venue is known for its exceptional acoustics and sightlines, making every note clear from front to back. Shows here focus on adventurous and experimental music, often featuring world premieres and collaborations across disciplines. The audience is typically attentive, drawn by the venue's commitment to innovative performances rather than casual socializing. A full bar is available, and seating is flexible, with cushioned chairs arranged to suit each event. The venue’s professional sound and lighting systems enhance the experience, and performances are ticketed, with advance purchase recommended. Expect an evening of thoughtful, boundary-pushing art in a setting that respects both the performers and the audience.
