Who’s Live Today?

Hope D Bates

Arthur's Tavern57 Grove Street, New York 10014

Hope DeBates brings North Forty to Arthur’s Tavern for a late-night set that moves across country classics, alt-country originals, 1970s and 1980s pop covers, plus selections from R&B and jazz standards. The group approaches that broad book creatively, with North Forty’s rotating personnel bringing their own styles and interpretations to the songs. Expect a set built around DeBates’s originals and a repertoire that makes room for familiar material without treating any one tradition as fixed.

Based in New York City since 1986, Hope DeBates has worked with musicians across a notably wide range of scenes, from avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor to Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes. North Forty is made up of a rotating cast of accomplished New York musicians, a setup that keeps the arrangements and feel of the material in motion from one lineup to the next. That combination of country-rooted writing, pop repertoire, R&B and jazz standards, and changing band perspectives is central to the project’s identity.

Arthur's Tavern is a basement club in the West Village where jazz, Latin, and blues are played with deep roots and modern energy. The stage is small, the room intimate, and the audience sits close to the musicians, often with a few people standing near the back. Shows start around 5 PM and go late, with some sets extending into the early hours. The club has a history of hosting top-tier performers since 2001, including regular appearances by Yuichi Hirakawa Jazz Group. It's a place where music is the center, and conversation flows naturally between the audience and the performers.
