Who’s Live Today?

ALFREDO COLÓN

Close Up154 Orchard St, New York 10002

Alfredo Colón brings his saxophone to Close Up for two sets on December 28. The Dominican-American saxophonist and composer is billed solo, with the evening presenting two chances to hear his playing in the room's close listening setting. The event is open to all ages, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A proud New York City native, Colón draws on Dominican folklore and the work of Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman. His playing has been described as “authoritative and fiery yet mournful and melodic,” and his music frames beauty in disarray. His collaborators include William Parker, Amirtha Kidambi, Henry Threadgill, Moses Sumney, Hamid Drake, Dawn Richard, Aaron Parks and Harish Raghavan, alongside Cautious Clay, Cafuné and Charlie Burg. Colón received the Jazz Coalition Commission Fund Grant in 2020, followed by Roulette Intermedium’s Van Lier Fellowship in 2022; he was a Roulette Resident Artist in 2023.

Close Up offers a focused jazz experience in a sleek, minimalist space on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where the sound system and acoustics bring every note into sharp relief. The venue features a small back room that invites close connection with the performers, creating a setting where music is the main event and distractions are minimal. Shows run six nights a week with multiple sets, encouraging a deep dive into the music rather than a casual night out. A bar serves Latin American-inspired bites and cocktails, complementing the listening experience without overwhelming it. The crowd tends to be attentive, drawn by the artist-driven programming that blends classic jazz traditions with fresh, innovative sounds. This is a place to settle in, listen closely, and savor the evolving jazz scene in a refined yet approachable environment.
