Eri Yamamoto Duo

Arthur's Tavern57 Grove Street, New York 10014

Eri Yamamoto brings her duo to Arthur’s Tavern for an early-evening set led by the pianist and composer. The billing confirms Yamamoto in a duo format, though her musical partner is not named. Expect a program rooted in her original, lyrical music, shaped by the melodic focus and open interplay that have made her a familiar presence in New York clubs as well as on international stages.

Born in Osaka, Japan, Yamamoto moved to New York in 1995 and has built a career as a distinctive jazz pianist and composer. Her work has reached audiences across the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Africa, Jamaica and Australia. In 2018, she premiered the Goshu Ondo Suite for chorus and trio, drawing together a traditional Shiga circle-dance song with Japanese folk music, jazz, gospel, blues and Congolese drum rhythms. Her collaborators include William Parker, Daniel Carter, Hamid Drake, Federico Ughi, Yves Léveillé and Paul McCandless. Herbie Hancock said, “My hat’s off to her… already she’s found her own voice,” while AUM Fidelity hears “contemplative, jubilant, mesmerizing songs” and a “remarkable gift for indelible melodies.”

Arthur's Tavern is a basement club in the West Village where jazz, Latin, and blues are played with deep roots and modern energy. The stage is small, the room intimate, and the audience sits close to the musicians, often with a few people standing near the back. Shows start around 5 PM and go late, with some sets extending into the early hours. The club has a history of hosting top-tier performers since 2001, including regular appearances by Yuichi Hirakawa Jazz Group. It's a place where music is the center, and conversation flows naturally between the audience and the performers.
