David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band brings its weekly Birdland residency to Manhattan on November 11. Led by tuba player David Ostwald, the group works with a rotating lineup of New York hot jazz players. The set draws inspiration from Louis Armstrong and fellow early jazz figures Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton, giving the evening a repertory-minded focus on the music of jazz's formative era.

The Louis Armstrong Eternity Band is a long-running Birdland institution, now in its 21st year of residency at the club. Ostwald leads the ensemble from the tuba, with the personnel changing around him from week to week. The band's stated mission is to bring "life and passion" to the work of Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Ellington, Morton and their contemporaries, approaching that early American jazz repertoire through the playing of specialists from New York's hot jazz scene.

Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
