Shoko Nagai's TOKALA
Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215
Shoko Nagai's TOKALA brings Shoko Nagai on accordion, electronics and voice together with percussionist Satoshi Takeishi, with a guest still to be announced. The project explores the ancient connections between Japan and the Middle East along the Silk Road, following cultural exchange and the imprint it left on Japanese culture. This is a focused set built around that meeting point between Far East Asia and the Islamic world.
TOKALA is Shoko Nagai's vehicle for tracing those historical links through sound. Nagai leads the group from accordion, electronics and voice, while Takeishi supplies percussion; the billed format places their dialogue at the core of the evening. Rather than presenting the Silk Road as a distant historical idea, the project is framed around the cultural exchange that became integral to Japanese culture, and around raising awareness of its connection with the Middle East.
Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
