Christmas with Champian Fulton
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Christmas with Champian Fulton brings the pianist and vocalist to Birdland for a holiday-titled engagement in quartet formation. The available information confirms the quartet but does not name its other members or their instruments, so the focus is squarely on Fulton’s piano and voice. With no further program details supplied, it is best read as a Christmas-season set led by one of the club’s returning jazz artists rather than a billed tribute or record-release show.
A Norman, Oklahoma native, Fulton is an internationally acclaimed pianist and vocalist whose piano work is known for its swinging sound and whose voice has been described as recalling “the old master vocalists.” She was named Hot House Readers Poll Pianist and Vocalist of the Year in 2019. Fulton is the daughter of trumpeter Stephen Fulton and has performed with him, including on Live From Lockdown. A review of an earlier Birdland holiday appearance called her an “enormously talented pianist/vocalist/composer” and found her reading of “Evenin’” reminiscent of Nat King Cole. That earlier engagement included bassist Hide Tanaka and drummer Fukushi Tainaka, though those musicians are not confirmed for this quartet date.
Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly. The venue features a full menu with dishes like New Orleans-style gumbo alongside a well-stocked bar, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drinks while listening. Each show is ticketed per set, encouraging focused listening as the music unfolds in roughly 45-minute segments. The club’s walls echo decades of jazz history, having hosted legends and continuing to attract top contemporary artists. Located in Manhattan’s Theater District, the space balances a serious music environment with the energy of a night out, where attentive audiences savor the performances without distraction. Booking ahead is essential, as the club fills quickly for its celebrated lineup.
