Sophie Dunér & Anthony Coleman / 'Messed-Up Stride' CD release concert & Art Exhibit

Sophie Dunér, Anthony Coleman

ShapeShifter Lab835 Union Street, New York 11215

Sophie Dunér and Anthony Coleman appear as a duo for the CD release concert for Messed-Up Stride, with an art exhibit also part of the evening. Dunér brings her “messed up stride” repertoire, and Coleman joins her on piano for what has been described as a take on those tunes. It is a focused meeting between a singer, composer and improviser and a pianist whose work moves readily between composition and free-playing.

Dunér is from Sweden and describes herself as a singer, composer and improviser. Her roots are in jazz, alongside avant-garde and contemporary classical influences, and her collaborators include Coleman, Ken Filiano, Gene Pritsker, Jonathan Powell and Dominic Duval Sr. Critics have called her a “high-octane performer” who works through “visceral contrasts, rhythmic changes, and simmering intensity.” MusicWeb International heard “Startling vocalese. A weirded-up Anita O’Day,” while Simon Jenner wrote, “Dunér beguiles and draws everyone in.” Coleman is a composer, improvising keyboardist and educator who has toured and recorded with John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, Shelley Hirsch and Roy Nathanson.
