ELIANA FISHBEYN
Close Up154 Orchard St, New York 10002
Eliana Fishbeyn brings a solo live-electronics set to Close Up. A composer, performer and educator, Fishbeyn has spent the past two years coding and building an electronic instrument informed by Butch Morris’s Conduction, Ramona Andra Langley’s Crash Music and other digital-age folk works. The result is an open-ended performance practice rather than a fixed ensemble format, with the instrument at the heart of the evening.
From Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Fishbeyn works between spontaneous piano composition and live electronics. She first presented this instrument in New York in late 2025 with Joel Ross’s experimental ensemble at the Jazz Gallery, then continued developing it alongside Samantha Kochis, Aaron Rubinstein and Nick Jozwiak. As a pianist, she has also performed and recorded in duo settings with Nicola Caminiti and Alex Hitchcock. Fishbeyn describes her music as “constantly morphing soundscapes,” opening onto “dream worlds of nostalgia, romanticism, chaos, and noise.” Her stated pull toward art that embraces uncertainty and multiple realities suggests a set built for shifting textures, interruption and discovery.
Close Up offers a focused jazz experience in a sleek, minimalist space on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where the sound system and acoustics bring every note into sharp relief. The venue features a small back room that invites close connection with the performers, creating a setting where music is the main event and distractions are minimal. Shows run six nights a week with multiple sets, encouraging a deep dive into the music rather than a casual night out. A bar serves Latin American-inspired bites and cocktails, complementing the listening experience without overwhelming it. The crowd tends to be attentive, drawn by the artist-driven programming that blends classic jazz traditions with fresh, innovative sounds. This is a place to settle in, listen closely, and savor the evolving jazz scene in a refined yet approachable environment.
