Jorma with special guest John Hurlbut
City Winery NYCHudson River Park Esplanade, New York 10014
Jorma Kaukonen comes to City Winery NYC’s Main Stage with special guest John Hurlbut for a date in a multi-show series. The billing names Kaukonen and Hurlbut but does not specify the evening’s musical formation or Hurlbut’s role. Expect a set shaped by Kaukonen’s long-running engagement with American roots music, blues and Americana, including his individual approach to older blues material and newer songs.
Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Kaukonen developed his love of blues and bluegrass amid the capital’s clubs and concerts, then absorbed the fingerstyle fretwork of Rev. Gary Davis through musician Ian Buchanan. He went on to co-found Jefferson Airplane, helping create much of the group’s signature sound with bassist Jack Casady, and later formed Hot Tuna with Casady, a partnership that has lasted more than five decades. A Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member and Grammy nominee, Kaukonen has also made more than a dozen solo albums. His work ranges from the counterculture-era psychedelic rock of Jefferson Airplane to acoustic releases including Stars in My Crown and River of Time, the latter produced by Larry Campbell and featuring Levon Helm.
