Brent Canter Quartet

The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013

Brent Canter brings his guitar-led quartet to The Django for a late set, joined by Christian Li on keyboards, Noah Garabedian on bass and Ross Pederson on drums. The New York group plays Canter's modern jazz, where post-bop meets alternative rock and drum and bass music. Expect distorted guitar sounds, flowing legato lines, deep grooves, dynamic harmony and melodies that stay in focus.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Canter later moved to New York, where he developed his sound in the city's scene. His listening reaches from Smashing Pumpkins and Bonnie Raitt to Michael Brecker and Pat Metheny, a span reflected in his writing and guitar approach. He has worked with or featured Bob Reynolds, Ben Wendel, Linda Oh, Seamus Blake and Pat Bianchi. His 2011 album Urgency of Now included Blake, organists Adam Klipple and Bianchi, and drummer Jordan Perlson. Hollywood Weekly wrote, “Canter is creating a new vocabulary for jazz, the new jazz standards for his generation,” while the Wall Street Journal praised music accessible to listeners “from any perspective.” Reviewing Urgency of Now, Something Else! heard a Kurt Rosenwinkel-like tone “but with the soft touch of Jim Hall,” and called the playing soulful.

The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
