Mamady Kouyate's MANDINGO AMBASSADORS

Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215

Mamady Kouyaté brings his Mandingo Ambassadors to Barbès for the group’s regular Wednesday engagement. Founded as a vehicle for Kouyaté’s own music, the band revisits the classic 1970s sound of Guinea’s Sylliphone recordings, with his lead guitar at its core. The group’s sound has included rhythm guitar, bass, drums and horns, with vocalists sometimes joining, in a set rooted in the Guinean Afro-jazz tradition.

Kouyaté is a Guinean guitarist and heir to a long line of griots. His father, among the first Guinean griots to bring guitar into the tradition, taught him by adapting kora and balafon lines for the instrument. Kouyaté made his early name as an electric guitarist in Guinea’s national dance bands during the 1970s Authenticité movement, then toured for years with Bembeya Jazz. He relocated to the United States in the early 2000s and founded the Mandingo Ambassadors in 2005. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times praised the band’s “dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system”; the paper also called the music “loud and light and unfailingly right.”

Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
