Derek Gripper Music from the Strings of Mali (RBA)
Roulette509 Atlantic Ave, New York 11217
South African guitarist Derek Gripper performs solo in Music from the Strings of Mali, interpreting music written for the 21-string West African kora on classical guitar. The program centers on kumbengo, the cyclical variations at the heart of West African musical tradition.
Gripper is known for his transcriptions of Malian kora compositions, particularly music by Toumani Diabaté, and has collaborated with Diabaté, Ballaké Sissoko and John Williams. The Kronos Quartet has premiered his string-quartet arrangements of Diabaté’s music. Songlines Magazine called his work “A staggering achievement on solo guitar.”
