Hector Martignon Trio
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Hector Martignon brings his trio to The Django with John Benitez on bass and Pablo Bencid on drums. The Colombian pianist and composer leads a piano-bass-drums set shaped by his approach to jazz improvisation and the musical idioms he draws into it. The evening places the group in The Django’s cellar-level room at the Roxy Hotel, with cocktails and local fare available alongside the performance.
Martignon comes from Bogotá and has lived in New York since 1989. Two of his albums, Refugee and Second Chance, received Grammy nominations, while the Smithsonian Institution’s Latin Jazz exhibit names him among leading artists “exploring the regional sources of Latin Jazz.” His work crossbreeds jazz’s improvisational language with Classical European music, Latin American folklore and World Music. He has played in Ray Barretto’s band, and his album Portrait in White and Black included guests Ray Barretto, Donny McCaslin and Luis Bonilla. Writing on that session, a reviewer called it “refreshingly original and as thoroughly musical,” praising Martignon’s playing as “technically clean and stylistically imaginative.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
