Who’s Live Today?

Donald Edwards Quintet

Jazzcultural347 West 46th Street, New York 10036

Donald Edwards brings his quintet to Jazzcultural for two sets, with Edwards on drums alongside Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone, Tony Davis on guitar, David Kikoski on piano and Ahmed McLemore on bass. It is a working band format built around drums, tenor, guitar, piano and bass, with the evening presented as a full two-set engagement rather than a one-off late appearance.

A drummer and composer with roots in “the rich and varied traditions of Louisiana,” Edwards pursues “creative improvisation, compositional development, and experimentation with rhythms.” His musical upbringing moved through marching band, hip-hop, pop, R&B, jazz, funk and gospel, and one profile places him “among the vanguard of players on the New York scene today.” Edwards has performed with Freddie Hubbard, Branford Marsalis, Tom Harrell and Kurt Elling. His album The Color of Us Suite has been called “a powerful political statement yet subtle in its presentation”; UK Vibe wrote that its music can speak to both the “gutbucket enthusiast” and “highbrow aficionado,” and is “beautiful enough to keep drawing you back.”

Jazzcultural offers a distinctive live music experience in Manhattan, housed in a space that invites close connection between performers and audience. The venue features a modestly sized room where the sound carries clearly, allowing even those at the back to catch the nuances of each set. Seating is available but limited, encouraging an attentive listening environment without the distraction of a bustling bar scene. The venue operates with ticketed shows, often featuring multiple sets that stretch into the late evening, giving you a full night of music. While there is a bar, the focus remains on the performances, making it a place to immerse yourself in the artistry of jazz. The neighborhood adds a quiet charm, making the walk to and from the venue part of the evening’s rhythm.
