Cowboy Junkies - Celebrating 40 Years and Beyond
City Winery NYCHudson River Park Esplanade, New York 10014
Cowboy Junkies bring their 40 Years and Beyond program to City Winery NYC’s Main Stage, tracing a career that runs from The Trinity Session to the recent Such Ferocious Beauty. The Toronto quartet performs as its long-standing core: Margo Timmins on vocals, Michael Timmins on guitar, Peter Timmins on drums, and Alan Anton on bass. It is a career-spanning set from a band whose personnel has remained intact, built around the family connection of the Timmins siblings and Anton’s lifelong friendship with Michael.
Formed in Toronto in 1985, Cowboy Junkies are known for a sound that brings folk, blues, and rock together with measured force. Their 1988 album The Trinity Session, recorded in a Toronto church, sold more than a million copies and remains central to their story; the band is also associated with its cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane.” Across 29 albums, they have worked with Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant, and Vic Chesnutt, and recorded songs by Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, the Cure, and David Bowie. AllMusic calls them “one of the most unique and enduring bands in alternative rock,” while American Songwriter says their music “slow boils with brooding intensity.”
