Mor ve Ötesi
Drom85 Avenue A, New York 10009
Mor ve Ötesi plays DROM in Manhattan on November 28, the final date in a run of New York concerts spanning November 26 through 28. The Turkish rock band returns for a full live set, bringing the powerful songwriting, socially conscious lyrics and electrifying performances highlighted by the venue. It is a chance to hear a group that has shaped modern Turkish rock for more than three decades in DROM's compact room.
Formed in 1995 by Kerem Kabadayı, Harun Tekin, Derin Esmer and Alper Tekin, Mor ve Ötesi emerged as a major force in Turkey's alternative-rock scene. Their early records included Şehir in 1996 and Bırak Zaman Aksın in 1999; after Derin Esmer left, guitarist Kerem Özyegen joined and Burak Güven had replaced Alper Tekin on bass. The band contributed "Sen Varsın" to a Bülent Ortaçgil tribute album, worked with Bülent Ortaçgil, Feridun Düzağaç and Nejat Yavaşoğulları on the anti-war song "Savaşa Hiç Gerek Yok," and wrote music for Çağan Irmak's film Mustafa Hakkında Her Şey. Their fourth album, Dünya Yalan Söylüyor, is described as the record that made them what they are today.
Drom offers a richly textured experience where music from around the world fills a compact, warmly lit room in Manhattan's East Village. The venue features a bar and serves small plates inspired by Spanish, Turkish, and Italian cuisines, complemented by an eclectic wine and cocktail list. Shows here often highlight cultural diversity, ranging from jazz and electronic to soul and world music, creating a night where attentive listening blends with socializing over drinks. Seating is available but limited, encouraging a close connection to the performers. Events typically start in the evening, with ticketing details varying by show, so planning ahead can enhance the experience. The venue’s walls and layout invite you to immerse yourself in the sounds and flavors, making each visit a unique journey through global music traditions.
