The Sound and Vision of David Bowie
The Cutting Room44 East 32nd Street, New York 10016
The Sound and Vision of David Bowie: A Celebration returns to The Cutting Room for its annual all-Bowie performance. Rather than a conventional tribute act, the night brings together former Bowie collaborators and co-conspirators to play his music. This year’s changing ensemble includes Brian Delaney, Catherine Russell, Donny McCaslin, Everett Bradley, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard, Henry Hey, Jim Boggia, JJ Appleton, Mark Plati, Sophia Anne Caruso and Tony Levin.
Organized by Henry Hey and Mark Plati, the New York gathering draws on musical relationships that run from Bowie’s 1995 Outside/Nine Inch Nails tour to the 2015 theatrical work Lazarus. The ensemble’s musicians and producers have participated in Bowie recordings and tours from 1997 onward, including Earthling, hours, Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, Blackstar and Toy. Reviewing the 2026 edition, Maggiore on Bowie called it “an annual tradition,” praising musicians “most of whose careers intersected with Bowie’s and all of whom are very good.” The review singled out Dorsey’s “Lazarus,” with McCaslin on saxophone, as a “pinnacle moment.”
The Cutting Room offers a distinctive live music experience in a space that balances a lively bar with attentive listening. The venue features a stage framed by exposed brick walls and warm lighting, creating a setting where the audience can enjoy performances up close. Seating is available but limited, encouraging a mix of sitting and standing that suits both focused listening and socializing. A full bar and a menu of thoughtfully prepared food complement the music, making it easy to settle in for the evening. Shows are ticketed, and purchasing tickets in advance is recommended to secure a spot. The venue often hosts multiple sets, allowing the night to unfold with a rich variety of sounds. This blend of quality music, good drinks, and a welcoming room makes for an engaging night out in Manhattan.
