T.K. Blue Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
T.K. Blue brings his quartet to The Django for a late set led by the acclaimed saxophonist. Blue plays saxophone, flute and kalimba, joined by Michael Cruse on trumpet, Matt Smythe on organ and George Coleman Jr on drums. The four-piece lineup puts Blue at the front of a band the venue calls a powerhouse, with the organ and drums shaping the group sound around his reeds and kalimba.
Blue is an alumnus of the bands of Randy Weston, Jimmy Scott and Abdullah Ibrahim. That history places this date in the work of a musician who has performed alongside major bandleaders and vocalists, while leading his own ensemble here. The billing foregrounds the breadth of his instrumental role, moving between saxophone, flute and kalimba, and pairs it with Cruse’s trumpet, Smythe’s organ and Coleman Jr’s drums for a quartet set.
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
