Charles McPherson leads a hard-swinging quintet with trumpeter Terell Stafford, pianist Jeb Patton, bassist David Wong and drummer Billy Drummond. The alto saxophonist's November 4 appearance opens a five-night, 12-show run.
Born in Joplin, Missouri, raised in Detroit and based in New York since 1959, McPherson is a bebop master whose music is rooted in blues and bebop. He played with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1972 and has also worked with Barry Harris, Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat Adderley and Phil Woods. Jazziz wrote that no jazz musician of the past 60 years has more palpably channeled the sound of Charlie Parker.
