John Lee Quartet LIVE at Roxy Bar
Roxy Bar2 Avenue of the Americas, New York 10013
John Lee returns to Roxy Bar in TriBeCa with a high-energy quartet. The bassist, composer and Grammy-winning producer leads the evening's live performance, bringing a band format to a room known for jazz alongside cocktails and American fare. Lee's long association with Dizzy Gillespie gives the date a direct connection to one of jazz's defining trumpet voices, though this is billed as the John Lee Quartet rather than a Gillespie tribute project.
From 1984 to 1993, Lee was Dizzy Gillespie's bassist, performing and recording in the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Big Band and the Grammy Award-winning United Nation Orchestra. After Gillespie's death, his family asked Lee to create an ongoing tribute to his music, leading to the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars. Lee is also bassist and director of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience. His work has also included bands led by Gary Bartz, Larry Coryell, Jon Faddis, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Gregory Hines, Miriam Makeba, James Moody, Claudio Roditi, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner.
Roxy Bar offers a stylish setting where live jazz fills the air, accompanied by a menu that caters to diverse tastes including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The room features plush seating and a well-stocked bar, creating a comfortable environment to enjoy performances by resident musicians or special guests. Shows typically run in the evening with sets from 6pm to 10pm, followed by DJs spinning vinyl late into the night. Weekend brunches also feature live music, blending dining and entertainment seamlessly. The venue balances attentive service with a relaxed vibe, making it a place to savor both cocktails and music without distraction. Its location in Tribeca adds a downtown charm, inviting guests to linger over oysters or a crafted cocktail while soaking in the sounds.
