Diego Hedez Quartet

The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013

Diego Hedez brings his quartet to The Django for a set led by his trumpet and flugelhorn. Pianist Manuel Valera, bassist Raúl Reyes and drummer Angel Luis Ruiz complete the band, placing Hedez's writing and improvising in a four-piece setting. The program is presented as contemporary jazz and improvised music, with the leader's work noted for free improvisation and sonic exploration.

Cuban-born and now based in New York, Hedez is a trumpeter and composer whose music has been characterized as bringing Cuban and Afro-Cuban traditions into contact with contemporary jazz and avant-garde practice. His collaborators include William Parker, David Virelles, Francisco Mela and Daniel Carter, and his performances have reached venues and festivals including the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Roulette Intermedium, Porgy & Bess, BRIC Festival and the Jazz Showcase. Recent work includes The Latin Jazz Quintet, collaborations with Matthieu Mazué, and the 577 Records project Turn of Events, with Mela. A review of that separate trio described its members as “three distinct and powerful improvisers” exploring “sonic freedom and form.”

The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
