Bennett Silverstein: Irving Berlin American Immigrant

Don't Tell Mama343 West 46th Street, New York 10036

Bennett Silverstein brings Irving Berlin: American Immigrant to Don’t Tell Mama as a solo cabaret tribute to the songwriter and to Berlin’s immigrant story. The program considers the contribution Berlin made to American culture, following a journey described as one from a Lower East Side singing waiter to a celebrated American songwriter. Silverstein is joined for this presentation by musical director and pianist Matthew Martin Ward.

Silverstein is a cabaret singer described by NiteLife Exchange as a “cabaret stalwart.” After a 50-year legal career, he retired and set himself the goal to “JUST SING.” His work in this Berlin program has drawn an “excellent” verdict from Cabaret Scenes, which singled out Ward’s “fine support throughout.” The reviewer also praised an arrangement combining “Russian Lullaby” with themes from Swan Lake as “expertly blended,” pointing to a show that frames Berlin’s songs alongside elements of the composer’s Russian heritage.

Don't Tell Mama offers a distinctive cabaret experience with four separate spaces including a piano bar and two cabaret showrooms, where bartenders and servers often perform live music themselves. The venue features Mediterranean cuisine alongside a full bar, with a cash-only policy for food and drinks. Seating is limited and first come, first served, so arriving early is wise to secure a spot. Shows typically start in the evening with a 2-drink minimum and ticketed entry, often featuring multiple sets and a mix of seasoned headliners and rising talent. The room’s walls and layout create a close connection between performers and audience, making it a place to truly listen and engage with the music. Located on Restaurant Row in the Theater District, it blends dining and entertainment in a lively yet focused setting.
