Brian Charette Sextette
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Brian Charette brings his sextette to The Django for a modern, funky organ-led set. Charette’s own itinerary describes the date as a “Modern funky organ sextet,” while the group’s recorded work has expanded the classic organ-trio setup with a four-part woodwind presence alongside Hammond B3 and drums. The result is a larger ensemble frame for the rhythmic pull and tonal possibilities of the organ.
A New York-based organist, Charette is described by The Django as “a leading voice in modern jazz.” He has worked with Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Houston Person and Oz Noy, and has received DownBeat Critics’ Poll recognition as a Rising Star: Organ, as well as Hot House Magazine’s Fan’s Decision Jazz Award for Best Organist. Critics have heard his organ-sextet music as “an anomaly in the world of organ-centric jazz,” noting its “textural exploration” and “groove variations.” Another review called the concept “a great idea to shake up the traditional organ combo format” that “offered something unique.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
