Brent Canter Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Brent Canter brings his quartet to The Django for a late set, with Canter on guitar alongside Christian Li on keyboards, Noah Garabedian on bass, and Ross Pederson on drums. The Los Angeles born, New York developed guitarist leads music the venue describes as a distinctly contemporary take on jazz: a meeting point for post-bop, alternative rock and drum and bass. Expect often-distorted guitar tones, legato lead lines, deep grooves, dynamic harmony and memorable melodies.
Canter was born and raised in Los Angeles, then moved to New York after graduating from UCLA, where he studied jazz with Kenny Burrell. An ASCAP Award-winning composer, he has drawn praise from JazzTimes and The Wall Street Journal. His groups have included musicians such as Nate Smith, Joe Bagg, Mark Ferber, Tamir Hendelman, Jared Gold, Brian Charette and Linda Oh; his album Urgency of Now features Seamus Blake, Adam Klipple, Pat Bianchi and Jordan Perlson. Hollywood Weekly hears Canter “creating a new vocabulary for jazz,” while The Wall Street Journal calls the quartet’s music approachable “from any perspective,” with no “degree in jazz studies” required. Something Else! praises his “soulful maneuverings” and “the soft touch of Jim Hall.”
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
