Trio Fadolín feat. Kinan Azmeh and Inna Barmash
Joe's Pub425 Lafayette Street, New York 10003
Trio Fadolín comes to Joe’s Pub with special guests Kinan Azmeh and vocalist Inna Barmash. The New York City ensemble is Sabina Torosjan on violin, Valeriya Sholokhova on cello, and Ljova on fadolín, an acoustic six-string violin whose added low C and F strings extend its range into viola territory and through much of the cello’s. The trio explores the instrument as part of an acoustic chamber setting, with Azmeh and Barmash joining the bill for this performance.
Formed during the pandemic, Trio Fadolín first performed in summer 2021 at the Javits Convention Center vaccination site. Its repertoire moves among original music and Ljova’s arrangements, composers’ work, and folk traditions from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The group has been presented by Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, PAC NYC, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and received the Ensemble Forward grant from Chamber Music America and the New York Community Trust for its work with composer and clarinetist Azmeh. Its debut album, Where We Are, features world-premiere recordings by Azmeh, Lembit Beecher, Ljova, and Alexander Zhurbin. Reviewing the trio with pianist Dan Tepfer, New York Classical Review noted its “intensity and concentration.”
The stage is set in a converted library space with a striped bar and photos of legends like Leonard Cohen and Amy Winehouse lining the walls. You'll find yourself seated on velvet couches or at candle-lit tables, close enough to hear every note from the back. The sound, engineered by technicians who've worked with John Legend and The Notorious B.I.G., is consistently ranked among the best in New York. Three shows a day, dinner and drinks served throughout, and a menu ranging from Italian small plates to craft cocktails; it's a place where music and conversation flow together, and where both rising stars and legends have made their U.S. debuts.
