Who’s Live Today?

SIMON MOULLIER

The Jazz Gallery1160 Broadway, New York 10001

Simon Moullier brings the premiere of his 2026 Jazz Gallery Residency Commission project to the Manhattan room, following the release of his newest album, Ceiba. The listing identifies Moullier alone, so the formation for this performance has not been announced. Expect a set centered on new commissioned music from a player DownBeat has called the “unchallenged new star of jazz vibraphone.”

Moullier is a Nantes, France-born vibraphonist, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader whose playing has been described as an “entirely new approach and sound” for the instrument. He has shared stages with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Gerald Clayton and Buster Williams, and appears on recordings with Mark Turner, Kendrick Scott, Miguel Zenón and Dayna Stephens. He won a Grammy as an arranger for Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards Vol. 1 and was named DownBeat’s Rising Star Vibraphone Player of the Year in 2023. Hancock says, “His music is fresh, it speaks to everyone. Never heard anyone play vibes like that before,” while Joshua Redman praises Moullier’s “melody, feel and flow.”

The Jazz Gallery offers a focused listening room experience on the fifth floor of a Midtown office building, where the audience gathers to hear progressive jazz performed by emerging and established artists. The space is designed to highlight the music without distractions: seating is arranged to bring listeners close to the performers, fostering a direct connection with the sound. There is no food service, but a bar is available, and ticket prices are modest, encouraging accessibility. Shows typically run from 7 to 11 pm on select nights, featuring multiple sets that invite deep engagement rather than casual socializing. The venue’s commitment to artistic growth is evident in its support for new compositions and collaborations, making an evening here a chance to witness jazz as a living, evolving art form in a setting that respects both the musicians and the audience.
