Ms. Lisa Fischer featuring Orrin Evans Trio
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
At Birdland, Ms. Lisa Fischer joins the Orrin Evans Trio for a vocal and piano-led collaboration that moves through jazz, soul and music beyond fixed genre lines. Fischer’s soulful, versatile singing meets Evans’s piano artistry and arrangements, with the pair’s interplay described by the venue as emotive and dynamic. This is a trio setting for a partnership that has also appeared as a duo and with Evans’s Captain Black Big Band, keeping the focus on how Fischer shapes a song and how the band responds.
Fischer is a Grammy- and Oscar-winning vocalist whose career includes 26 years of musicmaking with the Rolling Stones, as well as work with Luther Vandross, Sting and Tina Turner. Her recording “How Can I Ease the Pain?” won a Grammy. Evans is a Philadelphia-raised pianist and bandleader, named Rising Star Pianist in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. Backstage Bay Area heard “chemistry between the singer and the trio” in their work, writing that the partnership “sidestepped nostalgia and instead emphasized deconstruction.” SF Classical Voice described Fischer’s voice as able to rise “from a quiet murmur to a gale-force roar.”
