GATO LOCO
Barbès376 9th St, New York 11215
Gato Loco comes to Barbès led by Stefan Zeniuk, bringing the New York street-born ensemble's large-scale live set to the room. The band's own description frames the music as an instant party: a celebratory collision of a decadent Latin mambo ballroom and a 21st-century rock show, with the urban and the foreign held in the same frame. This is a full Gato Loco performance, with no additional guests or special-program details listed.
Born from the streets of New York, Gato Loco has carried its music widely through Europe and beyond, appearing at major festivals in France and Austria, jazz clubs in Holland and Germany, and greenhouses and art parties in Italy and Switzerland. The group recorded its 2009 debut, Coconino, in the basement of a Philadelphia spice factory. Since 2010, it has released two records on Winter & Winter: Gato Loco, recorded live in Bordeaux, and 2013's The Enchanted Messa, a reimagining of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem.
Barbès offers a compact, warmly worn space where the music feels immediate and close, with a long wooden bar and a back room under a scarlet ceiling that hosts nightly performances. The venue champions a broad spectrum of global sounds, from Balkan brass and klezmer to Afrobeat and experimental jazz, often featuring residencies like the Slavic Soul Party. The audience gathers around small tables or at the bar, sharing drinks crafted with a nod to French spirits, while the music invites attentive listening rather than loud conversation. Shows usually have a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, creating a welcoming environment where the focus is on the artists. The venue’s commitment to accessibility and its role in Brooklyn’s cultural fabric make it a distinctive spot for an evening of richly diverse live music.
