Danton Boller Trio
Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
Danton Boller brings his trio to Zinc Bar with Dave Kikoski on piano, Kush Abade on drums, and Boller on bass. The group puts a seasoned New York rhythm section and a major piano voice in the same room, with Boller leading from the bass. No further program details have been announced for the evening.
Based in New York City and raised near Los Angeles, Boller is a bassist, composer, producer, and educator. He is known for touring and recording with the Roy Hargrove Quintet and Big Band, including Hargrove’s Earfood and Emergence. His bass introduction to Hargrove’s “Strasbourg St. Denis” has, in Zinc Bar’s words, “gone on to become one of the best known new jazz standards around the world.” His playing and recording credits also include Seamus Blake, Ari Hoenig, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Russell Malone, Elvis Costello, Run the Jewels, and Taylor Mac. An event guide calls him “highly respected and versatile,” noting both his “foundational groove” and “sophisticated melodic contributions.”
Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
