Daniela Mack launches SUR, a program of Astor Piazzolla songs with Argentine bandoneonist JP Jofre and his quintet. Jofre directs and arranges for bandoneon, violin, cello, piano and double bass, with Siwoo Kim, Michael Nicolas, Sohee Kwon and Chris Johnson. The set includes “Vuelvo al Sur,” “Balada Para un Loco” and “Oblivion,” bringing Mack’s mezzo-soprano into tango nuevo’s rhythmic, improvisatory language.
Born in Buenos Aires, Mack is an Argentine-American opera and concert mezzo-soprano who has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. The New York Times has called her “outstanding,” while The Guardian praised her “virtuoso technique.” Jofre, from San Juan, Argentina, is a Grammy- and Latin Grammy-nominated composer and bandoneon player whose work has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, Paquito D’Rivera and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
National Sawdust offers a unique evening where music and innovation meet in a thoughtfully designed space that once housed a sawdust factory. The main hall, seating up to 185 guests with flexible arrangements, features a cutting-edge Meyer spatial sound system that immerses you in every note. The room’s raw brick walls and crystalline architectural elements create a striking contrast, enhancing the focus on the performance. A full bar is available, inviting you to enjoy a drink while fully engaging with the diverse range of genres presented by both emerging and established artists. Shows are ticketed, and purchasing ahead is recommended to secure your spot in this intimate yet spacious venue. The experience is centered on listening and discovery, making for an evening that feels both special and thoughtfully curated.
