Mingus Big Band
The Pocket130 West 46th Street, New York 10036
Mingus Big Band brings its Charles Mingus repertory to The Pocket for an evening with the 14-piece New York ensemble. Formed to perform exclusively the music of the composer, bassist and activist, the band works from fresh arrangements of Mingus compositions, drawing on a rotating pool of established and rising players. This is a chance to hear that book played in the close-up, attentive setting of the Manhattan room.
Sue Mingus formed the band in 1991, building on the Mingus Dynasty septet, and it has kept Mingus's music in live repertory through a long-running New York residency. The group has received seven Grammy nominations and won the 2011 Grammy for Live at Jazz Standard. Critics have called the band “charismatic” and “unpredictable,” with The Guardian praising the “power, passion and capricious swing” in the music. Other notices describe an “unstoppable band” and hear a balance of “anarchy and tight discipline.”
The Pocket offers a close-up encounter with world-class jazz musicians in a small, focused setting where every note feels immediate and unfiltered. The room is designed to bring listeners near the performers, creating a direct connection that makes the music feel personal and vivid. Seating is limited and arranged to emphasize attentive listening rather than casual socializing, with a bar available to complement the experience. Shows are ticketed, encouraging an audience that is there to fully engage with the performance. The venue’s location in Manhattan places it within easy reach of the city’s vibrant cultural pulse, making it a perfect spot for an evening dedicated to serious jazz appreciation without distractions.
