The Sound and Vision of David Bowie
The Cutting Room44 East 32nd Street, New York 10016
The Sound and Vision of David Bowie: A Celebration returns to The Cutting Room for its annual all-Bowie performance. This is a band of latter-day Bowie collaborators and co-conspirators playing his music exclusively, drawing on a shared history that runs from the 1995 Outside/Nine Inch Nails tour through the theatre work Lazarus. The announced performers are Brian Delaney, Catherine Russell, Donny McCaslin, Everett Bradley, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard, Henry Hey, Jim Boggia, JJ Appleton, Mark Plati, Sophia Anne Caruso and Tony Levin.
The ensemble is rooted in Bowie’s later creative circle rather than a conventional tribute-band format. Its members have participated in his recordings and tours from 1997 onward, with connections to Earthling, hours, Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, Blackstar and the posthumously released Toy. A 2026 review called the group an “all-star band of eleven musicians,” most of whose careers intersected with Bowie’s, and described an “incredible 30-song set.” That review singled out Gail Ann Dorsey and Donny McCaslin’s “Lazarus” as a “pinnacle moment,” while another account called Gerry Leonard’s guitar playing “genius.”
The Cutting Room offers a distinctive live music experience in a space that balances a lively bar with attentive listening. The venue features a stage framed by exposed brick walls and warm lighting, creating a setting where the audience can enjoy performances up close. Seating is available but limited, encouraging a mix of sitting and standing that suits both focused listening and socializing. A full bar and a menu of thoughtfully prepared food complement the music, making it easy to settle in for the evening. Shows are ticketed, and purchasing tickets in advance is recommended to secure a spot. The venue often hosts multiple sets, allowing the night to unfold with a rich variety of sounds. This blend of quality music, good drinks, and a welcoming room makes for an engaging night out in Manhattan.
