Who’s Live Today?

Cascadence w/ Alexa Barchini

Jalopy Theatre315 Columbia Street, New York 11231

Cascadence brings its string-trio lineup to Jalopy Theatre: Sara Caswell on violin, Matt Davis on guitar, and Chris Coyle on bass. The three composer-improvisers move through original music shaped by modern jazz, chamber music, and experimental folk, balancing close sensitivity with an improvisational edge. New York City jazz vocalist and songwriter Alexa Barchini joins the bill.

Caswell is a sought-after collaborator whose work has included Chris Potter, Brian Blade, and David Byrne. Davis leads several projects, notably Aerial Photograph, bringing together string quartet writing and large jazz-ensemble lineups. Coyle works across jazz and new-music concepts, taking on varied roles on bass. Barchini, raised in a culturally diverse family as the daughter of an opera singer, developed her singing through folk, Americana, and jazz traditions. As a bandleader and sideman, she has toured the United States and Europe and performed at venues including Dizzy’s Club, the Blue Note, National Sawdust, Smalls, Smoke Jazz Club, and the Kimmel Center of Philadelphia.

Jalopy Theatre offers a unique evening centered on folk and traditional music in a space that feels like a blend of a vintage music hall and a community gathering spot. The venue holds around 100 people, with seating that invites close-up listening, allowing you to catch every nuance of the acoustic performances. The walls reflect its roots in handmade and analog traditions, creating a setting where the music’s authenticity is palpable. Adjacent to the theatre, the Jalopy Tavern serves drinks late into the night, often with live music of its own, extending the experience beyond the main show. Shows are ticketed and often feature multiple sets, fostering a night where the music and the crowd’s focus are intertwined, making it a place to truly immerse yourself in the sounds and stories of roots music.
