Kurt Elling
Birdland315 West 44th Street, New York 10036
Kurt Elling brings his vocal jazz to Birdland for this 7 p.m. engagement. No accompanying musicians or special program are listed, so the focus is Elling’s own repertoire and his distinctive approach to song: a rich sound shaped by contemporary Beat lyricism and vocalese. The evening comes as Elling is making his Broadway debut as Hermes in Hadestown, while new releases include SuperBlue: Guilty Pleasures, Vol. 2, with Charlie Hunter, and the duo EP Wildflowers, Vol. 3, with pianist and composer Christian Sands.
Chicago-based Elling is a two-time Grammy winner whose more than 25 years of touring and recording have brought 17 Grammy nominations, 15 Jazz Journalists Association Male Vocalist of the Year awards, and two decades leading DownBeat’s Critics and Readers polls. The New York Times called him “the standout male jazz vocalist of our time,” while The Guardian heard “a kind of Sinatra with superpowers.” His collaborators include Branford Marsalis, Danilo Pérez, Fred Hersch, Charlie Hunter and the Yellowjackets; he has also appeared as a soloist with ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, WDR Big Band, and the Count Basie, Metropole and Village Vanguard Orchestras.
Birdland offers a refined jazz experience in a room where the audience sits at tables close to the stage, allowing every note to reach you clearly.
