Who’s Live Today?

TATIANNA OVERTON - Miki Yamanaka - Tyrone Allen II - Kayvon Gordon

Close Up154 Orchard St, New York 10002

Tatianna Overton leads a quartet with Miki Yamanaka on piano, Tyrone Allen II on bass, and Kayvon Gordon on drums. The evening is presented in two sets, with Overton’s voice at the front of a group that brings together piano, bass, and drums. Her work spans sacred, jazz, classical, and contemporary performance traditions, and this date places that vocal range in a compact quartet setting.

New York-born and based, Overton brings more than 15 years of classical training, including study at the Aaron Copland School of Music, alongside experience as a cantor and choral section leader. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Apollo, David Geffen Hall, and Kings Theatre. Her approach joins reverence for sacred hymns with an engagement with the present, informing her readings of traditional songbook standards and newer material. Her live-looping project, .tatio, has further developed her work with voice, improvisation, composition, and rhythmically complex, spiritually rooted material. Yamanaka is a Japanese-born pianist who has lived in New York City since 2012; Allen and Gordon complete the rhythm section on bass and drums.
