Who’s Live Today?

Axel Tosca

Arthur's Tavern57 Grove Street, New York 10014

Axel Tosca brings his trio to Arthur’s Tavern for a Saturday night set. Tosca usually works in the trio format he calls WTF, though the musicians joining him for this particular date have not been confirmed. Expect the pianist’s own blend of jazz, Latin music and timba, a sound that makes room for Cuban rhythmic language alongside the flexibility of a working New York jazz trio. This appearance is part of his Saturday residency at the West Village club.

Cuban-born and now based in New York, Tosca is a pianist with a genre-bending approach shaped by jazz, Latin and timba music. His regular trio collaborators have included bassist Daniel Winshall and drummer David Frazier Jr. Beyond his own projects, he has played with The Roots on their Cuba tour and worked with George Clinton, BeBe Winans, the Clark Sisters, Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino, J Balvin and Bad Bunny. His 2016 debut album featured a notable cast including Xiomara Laugart, Keyon Harrold, Ron Blake, Jeff “Tain” Watts, James Genus and Luisito Quintero. Arthur’s Tavern describes him as “a dynamic performer.”

Arthur's Tavern is a basement club in the West Village where jazz, Latin, and blues are played with deep roots and modern energy. The stage is small, the room intimate, and the audience sits close to the musicians, often with a few people standing near the back. Shows start around 5 PM and go late, with some sets extending into the early hours. The club has a history of hosting top-tier performers since 2001, including regular appearances by Yuichi Hirakawa Jazz Group. It's a place where music is the center, and conversation flows naturally between the audience and the performers.
