Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks

Vince Giordano leads the Nighthawks for a Birdland Theater residency date, bringing the 11-piece band’s recreation of authentic jazz sounds from the 1920s and beyond. This is a full orchestra presentation rather than a stripped-down combo set: the group is devoted to the arrangements, swing, and instrumental colors of early jazz, with the evening centered on the Nighthawks’ period repertoire.

Giordano is a Grammy Award-winning, New York-born multi-instrumentalist, and his New York City orchestra has become known for sustaining the sound of 1920s and 1930s hot jazz. The Nighthawks have worked in clubs and concert halls internationally, while their precise period sound has also reached film and television through projects including The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, Café Society, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. The band calls itself “one of the most authentic champions of hot jazz from the 1920s and 30s.” Reviewers have heard both rigor and lift in that approach: The New York Times described “an erupting sense of euphoria,” while Nitelife Exchange called Giordano’s sets “fast and fabulous.”
